From ‘Aasim al-Ahwaal who said :                

“We used to enter upon Hafsa bint Sireen, and she would cover herself with her Jilbaab like this:  she would cover her face.

So we would say to her: “May Allaah have mercy on you! Allaah The Exalted said :

وَالْقَوَاعِدُ مِنَ النِّسَاء اللَّاتِي لَا يَرْجُونَ نِكَاحًا فَلَيْسَ عَلَيْهِنَّ جُنَاحٌ أَن يَضَعْنَ ثِيَابَهُنَّ غَيْرَ مُتَبَرِّجَاتٍ بِزِينَةٍ

‘And as for women past child-bearing who do not expect wed-lock, it is no sin on them if they discard their (outer) clothing in such a way as not to show their adornment…’

 

 

And what is meant here is the Jilbaab.’

 

He the narrator said: ‘so she would say to us:

‘Then what is next?’ 

 

We would say [reciting the next portion of the verse]:

 

وَأَن يَسْتَعْفِفْنَ خَيْرٌ لَّهُنَّ

…But to refrain (i.e. not to discard their outer clothing) is better for them…

 

 

Thus we would say:

‘This [action of her’s] is the real affirmation of Hijaab (covering one’s self).’’
